Our Mum was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease at the age of 91. She had been suffering with speech and swallowing difficulties for some time, and this was put down to “old age”. She was admitted to hospital when it became almost impossible for her to eat and drink, and was finally diagnosed with Bulbar Onset MND (PBP).
Mum was very brave and at 91 years of age accepted to have a PEG inserted for nutrition. She had to adjust her way of life, giving up her favourite foods and cups of tea. Mum was still very mobile and would go on long walks to the park and beach. She was still very mentally alert and when we couldn’t understand what she wanted to say, she would patiently write it down.
Mum’s MND eventually affected her respiratory function and she passed away peacefully in January this year.
The MND society provided invaluable support to Valerie and our family during this time. They provided necessary equipment such as a hospital bed, padded recliner chair, wheelchair and walking frame to allow Mum to stay home as long as possible.
Please consider making a donation to allow the MND association to continue to assist families like ours with day-to-day needs. Their help was invaluable.
