Be the Light. Brighten the lives of people facing MND.
No one plans for the worst to happen to them and their loved ones, but motor neurone disease can affect anyone, at any time.
An MND diagnosis is different for everyone, but as a progressive, life-limiting disease, its effects are challenging and far-reaching. Depending on where someone facing MND lives, and their age at diagnosis, can mean they are not eligible for NDIS or other government support. They can be left to struggle financially, emotionally, physically, and socially as they can no longer work, easily go out in their community, communicate, or independently care for themselves and move around. These effects are also keenly felt by their carers and family members, trying their best to support their loved one in difficult circumstances.
No matter their age or location, MND NSW won't leave anyone in the dark. We are here to help everyone facing MND in NSW, the ACT and NT. With your generosity, we are able to address the inequality of support offered to people experiencing this challenging disease. This means we provide equipment free of charge to those unable to receive financial assistance for it from Government or other means, we offer support groups and educational sessions for urban and rural and regional areas, statewide MND advisor services and more.
Support our 2024 Christmas Appeal and share your message of hope for people living with MND - let's stand together and show them they are not alone on their MND Journey.
John's Story
A race for NDIS
John was 64 years old when he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. The disease has had an impact on so much of his life, leaving him fatigued and unable to do some of the things he enjoyed most. With assistance from MND NSW, he was able to have his NDIS application fast-tracked to ensure he was eligible for the program, and could get the support he deserves.
Wayne and Margaret's Story
Addressing age disadvantage
Active and sporty, Margaret was suddenly struck down by MND, with Wayne becoming her carer. Her age at diagnosis meant she missed out on key government supports, like the NDIS, but MND NSW has helped bridge the gap.
Jean and David's Story
Rural and regional support
Jean and David were active members of their rural community. However, after experiencing medical issues, David was unexpectedly diagnosed with MND. Jean has continued to be community-minded, participating in the support and educational opportunities offered by MND NSW, and encouraging their local healthcare providers to take part too.

"MND – well, we knew nothing about it, so once Margaret was diagnosed with it, we had to find out what we do, who could assist us – that’s where MND NSW came in and helped. I couldn’t have done it without them. We were just so lucky."
- Wayne
"My life is very different now after being diagnosed with MND, the fatigue can be hard to deal with and I have good days and bad days. Knowing I can ring MND NSW is still very reassuring."
- John
"The information presented was clear and precise, and it was good to try out FlexEquip equipment. If MND NSW can do these sessions in more regional areas it would be very helpful, it’s so important."
